Woodwardia unigemmata – Jewelled Chain Fern

Woodwardia unigemmata, commonly known as Jewelled Chain Fern, is a spectacular, architectural evergreen fern prized for its dramatic foliage and unusual colour changes.

Native to the mountain woodlands of Asia, it produces magnificent, arching fronds that emerge rich coppery-red and bronze, gradually turning glossy, deep green. Mature fronds can reach 1.5 metres long, forming an impressive plant approximately 100–150 cm high and 150–250 cm wide.

A fascinating feature is the development of small plantlets, or bulbils, near the tips of mature fronds.

Thriving in partial shade, this striking woodland fern prefers consistently moist, humus-rich soil and a sheltered position.

Ideal for woodland gardens, large shaded borders, damp areas and architectural planting, its bold foliage brings an exotic, tropical appearance to Irish gardens.

Protect from cold, drying winds and severe winter frosts.
