Fuchsia excorticata – New Zealand Tree Fuchsia

Fuchsia excorticata, commonly known as New Zealand Tree Fuchsia or Kōtukutuku, is a remarkable, fast-growing deciduous shrub or small tree, prized for its unusual flowers and attractive peeling bark. Native to New Zealand, it produces slender, pendulous flowers that open greenish-yellow before developing beautiful pink, red and violet-purple tones, followed by dark purple berries. Its soft green leaves have distinctive pale, silvery undersides, while mature stems display striking cinnamon-coloured, papery bark.

Capable of reaching 8–12 metres high in ideal conditions, it can be maintained at a smaller size by pruning.

Preferring partial shade or sheltered sun, it thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Ideal for sheltered woodland gardens, exotic planting schemes and large containers. Requires frost protection in all but milder areas of Ireland. Hardier once established. Our garden tree is 12 years old and going strong.
