Polystichum neolobatum – Asian Shield Fern

Polystichum neolobatum, commonly known as Asian Shield Fern, is a striking, hardy evergreen fern prized for its bold, architectural foliage and distinctive scaly stems. Native to the mountain woodlands of East Asia, it produces elegant, upright to arching fronds with glossy, deep green, leathery leaflets and finely toothed, spiny margins. In spring, attractive new fronds emerge covered in rusty-brown scales, gradually unfurling into a handsome, shuttlecock-shaped clump.

Growing approximately 50–80 cm high and 40–50 cm wide, this unusual woodland fern provides year-round structure and texture.

Thriving in partial to full shade, it prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, tolerating some dry shade once established. Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting shrubs and containers, its robust evergreen foliage contrasts beautifully with hostas and more delicate ferns.

An excellent, low-maintenance choice for Irish gardens.
