Osmunda regalis 'Purpurascens' – Purple Royal Fern

Osmunda regalis 'Purpurascens', commonly known as Purple Royal Fern, is a magnificent, hardy deciduous fern prized for its striking seasonal colours and elegant, architectural foliage. In spring, graceful, finely divided fronds emerge in rich reddish-purple and bronze shades, gradually maturing to fresh green while their distinctive purple-red stems retain their colour. In autumn, the foliage turns beautiful golden-yellow, adding further seasonal interest.

Forming an impressive, upright clump approximately 100–150 cm high and 50–100 cm wide, this colourful Royal Fern thrives in partial shade and consistently moist to wet, humus-rich, acidic or neutral soil. It also tolerates sunshine where moisture is plentiful.

Ideal for bog gardens, pond margins, damp woodland gardens and waterside planting, its dramatic foliage combines beautifully with Rodgersia, astilbes and other moisture-loving perennials.
