Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’, commonly known as golden Japanese forest grass, is a graceful, shade-loving ornamental grass that adds movement and colour to any garden. Growing 40–60 cm tall, it forms arching, fountain-like clumps of narrow leaves striped gold and green, which shimmer beautifully in dappled sunlight and sway elegantly in the breeze.

It thrives in partial to full shade, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and prefers a sheltered spot to protect its delicate foliage. Low-maintenance and slow-spreading, it’s perfect for borders, woodland gardens, or containers.

Interesting fact: In autumn, the foliage of ‘Aureola’ often turns bright amber or copper, creating a stunning seasonal display that lasts well into winter — a golden finale to the garden year.

Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (RHS AGM).
