Gymnocarpium dryopteris ‘Plumosum’ – Plumed Oak Fern

Gymnocarpium dryopteris ‘Plumosum’ is a beautiful, low-growing deciduous fern, valued for its fresh, bright green foliage and delicate woodland character. A particularly attractive form of the Oak Fern, it produces triangular, finely divided fronds with broader, overlapping leaflets, giving a fuller, softer appearance than the species.

Growing approximately 15–30cm tall, this hardy, spreading fern gradually forms a carpet of foliage 50–100cm wide through slender creeping rhizomes. It thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil that is acidic to neutral.

An excellent ground-cover fern for shaded gardens, woodland planting, banks and beneath shrubs, where its fresh green foliage contrasts beautifully with hostas and larger ferns.

RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
