Polygonatum hirtum – Broad-leaved Solomon's Seal

Polygonatum hirtum, also known as Polygonatum latifolium, is an elegant deciduous woodland perennial admired for its gracefully arching stems and broad, rich green leaves. In spring, clusters of delicate creamy-white, tubular flowers tipped with green hang beneath the foliage, followed by rounded berries later in the season.

Growing approximately 60–100cm tall and gradually spreading 30–60cm, this hardy, rhizomatous perennial forms attractive colonies over time. It thrives in partial to full shade, preferring fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, although established plants tolerate some seasonal dryness.

An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, naturalistic planting and beneath deciduous trees, it combines beautifully with ferns, hostas and other shade-loving perennials.
