Dryopteris wallichiana – Wallich's Wood Fern

Dryopteris wallichiana, commonly known as Wallich's Wood Fern or Alpine Wood Fern, is a magnificent, hardy, semi-evergreen fern prized for its striking upright, architectural foliage. Bright yellowish-green fronds emerge in spring, contrasting beautifully with distinctive dark brown to almost black, scaly stems and midribs.

Maturing to rich green, the elegant, finely divided fronds form an impressive shuttlecock-shaped clump, reaching approximately 90–120 cm high and 60–90 cm wide.

This vigorous Himalayan fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, although established plants tolerate some dry shade. Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting trees and architectural planting, it provides height, structure and lush foliage interest. An excellent, low-maintenance choice for Irish shade gardens.

RHS AGM: Award of Garden Merit.
