Epimedium × versicolor ‘Sulphureum’ – Yellow Barrenwort

Epimedium × versicolor ‘Sulphureum’ is a hardy woodland perennial with delicate sprays of soft sulphur-yellow flowers in spring, held above heart-shaped leaves flushed bronze-red when young. Its evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage forms attractive ground cover, reaching approximately 30–35 cm tall and 40–50 cm wide, gradually spreading with age.

Grow in partial or full shade in humus-rich, well-drained soil. It prefers moisture while establishing but tolerates dry shade once settled, making it particularly useful beneath trees and shrubs. Remove tired foliage in late winter before the flower stems emerge to reveal the spring display.

An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, ‘Sulphureum’ brings dependable foliage and gentle spring colour to shaded borders alongside ferns, hellebores and woodland bulbs.
