Dryopteris erythrosora - Rosy Buckler Fern RHS AGM

Dryopteris erythrosora – Autumn Fern / Copper Shield Fern

Dryopteris erythrosora, commonly known as the Autumn Fern or Copper Shield Fern, is a beautiful, evergreen fern prized for its spectacular copper-red and bronze-pink new fronds. Emerging in spring and often continuing through summer, the colourful young foliage gradually matures to glossy, deep green.

Growing approximately 60–75cm tall and 50–75cm wide, this fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It tolerates some dry shade once established, although regular moisture encourages the best growth.

An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, fern collections, containers and planting beneath trees and shrubs, Dryopteris erythrosora provides attractive foliage colour and texture throughout much of the year. Particularly effective alongside hostas, epimediums and other shade-loving perennials.

RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
