Thelypteris decursive-pinnata – Japanese Beech Fern
Thelypteris decursive-pinnata, syn. Phegopteris decursive-pinnata, commonly known as Japanese Beech Fern, is an attractive, hardy deciduous fern prized for its elegant, finely textured foliage and graceful woodland character. Native to East Asia, it produces distinctive narrow, deeply divided, upright to arching fronds, emerging fresh, pale green in spring before developing subtle blue-green tones as they mature.
Growing approximately 30–50 cm high and spreading 50–100 cm, this unusual woodland fern gradually forms attractive colonies through creeping rhizomes, providing delicate ground cover.
Thriving in partial to full shade, it prefers consistently moist, humus-rich, acidic to neutral soil, tolerating heavier soils that retain moisture.
Ideal for woodland gardens, damp shaded borders, underplanting shrubs and naturalistic planting, its elegant foliage contrasts beautifully with hostas, epimediums and other shade-loving perennials.
