Digitalis Γ— mertonensis, commonly known as Merton foxglove, is a charming, cottage-garden favourite with a slightly wild, natural elegance. It typically grows to 90–120 cm tall, forming upright spikes of tubular, soft-pink flowers with subtle speckled throats, appearing from late spring to early summer. The foliage is a rosette of grey-green, slightly fuzzy leaves, providing a gentle contrast to the vibrant flower spikes.

It thrives in full sun to partial shade, in well-drained, moderately fertile soil, and is relatively hardy once established. Deadheading spent flowers encourages a tidier appearance and can extend the flowering season.

Interesting fact: Digitalis Γ— mertonensis is a hybrid of Digitalis purpurea and Digitalis grandiflora, combining the showy flower spikes of both parents with improved vigour and garden reliability β€” a perfectly polite way of saying it inherited the best of both worlds.

Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award for Garden Merit.
