Dryopteris dilatata – Broad Buckler Fern

Dryopteris dilatata, commonly known as Broad Buckler Fern, is a beautiful, hardy, semi-evergreen fern native to Ireland, prized for its lush, finely divided foliage and graceful woodland appearance. Its broad, triangular, deep green fronds feature intricately toothed leaflets and distinctive dark brown scales along the stems.

Forming a handsome, upright to arching, shuttlecock-shaped clump approximately 80–150 cm high and 60–100 cm wide, this vigorous native fern brings height, structure and rich texture to shaded planting schemes. Thriving in partial to full shade, it prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil, although established plants tolerate some dry shade.

Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting trees, wildlife gardens and naturalistic planting, its elegant foliage contrasts beautifully with hostas and other shade-loving perennials. An excellent, low-maintenance fern for Irish gardens.
