Athyrium niponicum ‘Pewter Lace’ – Japanese Painted Fern

Athyrium niponicum ‘Pewter Lace’, commonly known as Japanese Painted Fern, is a beautiful deciduous fern prized for its finely divided, lacy fronds in striking shades of pewter-silver, blue-green and burgundy, making it an excellent choice for adding colour and texture to shady gardens. Growing to around 40–50cm tall and wide, it forms an elegant, compact clump and is ideal for woodland borders, shaded beds, underplanting shrubs or growing in containers. For best results, plant ‘Pewter Lace’ in partial to full shade with moist, fertile, humus-rich and well-drained soil; it particularly enjoys neutral to acidic conditions and a sheltered position. Hardy to around -15°C (RHS H5), this low-maintenance Japanese Painted Fern dies back in winter before producing fresh, colourful fronds in spring.
