Asarum maximum 'Ling Ling' - Panda Face Ginger

Asarum maximum ‘Ling Ling’ – Panda Face Wild Ginger

An unusual evergreen perennial for shady gardens, Asarum maximum ‘Ling Ling’ combines glossy, heart-shaped green leaves, often marked with silver, with extraordinary flowers. In spring, velvety, almost black blooms with contrasting white centres appear at ground level beneath the foliage, giving this plant its memorable ‘Panda Face’ name.

Growing approximately 15cm high and 30–50cm wide, it slowly forms an attractive clump, ideal for woodland borders, shaded containers and planting alongside ferns or miniature hostas. Grow in partial to full shade, in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, preferably acid to neutral. Choose a sheltered position, keep watered during dry spells and mulch with leaf mould. Protect young growth from slugs and snails.
