Uncinia uncinata ‘Rubra’ – a striking evergreen sedge prized for its rich bronze-red foliage, which brings warmth and contrast to planting schemes all year round. Forming neat, arching clumps around 30–45 cm tall and wide, its fine, grass-like leaves add movement and colour in equal measure.

In summer, slender stems carry small brown flower spikes tipped with distinctive hooked seeds (a botanical curiosity rather than a showy feature).

Thrives in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade, though it will tolerate full sun if kept adequately watered. Ideal for containers, edging paths, gravel gardens, or adding contrast among green-leaved perennials. Best in a sheltered position in colder areas, as it dislikes prolonged winter wet and severe frost.

Low-maintenance and beautifully coloured, it’s an easy way to weave a thread of copper through the garden without overpowering its neighbours.
