Trillium erectum – Red Trillium
Trillium erectum, commonly known as Red Trillium or Red Wake-Robin, is a striking deciduous woodland perennial, prized for its unusual, nodding deep maroon-red flowers, often reaching 5–9cm across. Appearing in April and May, each three-petalled flower is held above a distinctive whorl of three broad, rich green leaves, creating a beautifully simple yet dramatic spring display.
Growing approximately 30–50cm tall and 30–40cm wide, this slow-growing, rhizomatous perennial gradually develops into impressive clumps when left undisturbed. Grow in partial to full shade in deep, fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, preferably acidic to neutral.
An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders and naturalising beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, Trillium erectum combines beautifully with ferns, hostas and other spring woodland plants.
RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) – awarded in 1993.
RHS hardiness: H5 (-15 to -10°C).
