Pteridium aquilinum – Common Bracken Fern
Pteridium aquilinum, commonly known as Bracken or Common Bracken Fern, is a vigorous, deciduous fern native to Ireland, valued for its large, triangular, finely divided green fronds and natural woodland character. Emerging as tightly curled shoots in spring, the elegant fronds develop into broad, arching foliage, turning attractive russet-brown shades in autumn.
Growing approximately 100–150 cm high, occasionally reaching 200 cm, this hardy native fern spreads extensively through underground rhizomes, forming large colonies.
Thriving in full sun or partial shade, it tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, particularly acidic conditions.
Best suited to large woodland gardens, naturalistic landscapes, wildlife areas and habitat restoration, where its vigorous growth can be accommodated. Superb in containers!
