Polystichum munitum – Western Sword Fern

Polystichum munitum, commonly known as the Western Sword Fern, is a handsome, robust evergreen fern valued for its long, arching, deep green fronds and strong architectural presence. The neatly divided fronds form a graceful shuttlecock-shaped clump, bringing year-round structure and texture to shaded gardens.

Growing approximately 60–120cm tall and 60–120cm wide, this hardy fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Once established, it is more tolerant of drier conditions than many ferns, making it a reliable choice for woodland planting and sheltered shady borders.

An excellent fern for woodland gardens, shaded beds, naturalistic planting and large containers, Polystichum munitum is particularly useful for adding bold evergreen foliage and a lush, established look.
