Polystichum aculeatum- Hard Shield Fern P9

Polystichum aculeatum – Hard Shield Fern

Polystichum aculeatum, commonly known as Hard Shield Fern or Prickly Shield Fern, is a beautiful, hardy evergreen fern native to Ireland, prized for its elegant, architectural foliage. Its glossy, deep green, leathery fronds are finely divided, with slightly prickly, toothed leaflets and attractive brown-scaled stems.

New fronds emerge fresh green in spring, gradually forming a neat, upright to arching, shuttlecock-shaped clump approximately 50–90 cm high and 50–80 cm wide.

Thriving in partial to full shade, this reliable native woodland fern prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil, tolerating acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions. Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting trees, rockeries and naturalistic planting, its robust evergreen foliage provides year-round structure and texture.
