Polystichum acrostichoides – Christmas Fern

Polystichum acrostichoides, commonly known as Christmas Fern, is a handsome evergreen fern from eastern North America, valued for its tough, glossy dark-green fronds that provide year-round structure in the garden. Growing to around 50–60cm tall and wide, it forms a neat, clump-forming habit and is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, underplanting trees and shrubs, and containers. Grow Christmas Fern in partial to full shade, preferably in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil; once established, it can also tolerate periods of drier conditions. Hardy to around -15°C (RHS H5) and relatively low maintenance, Polystichum acrostichoides is an excellent choice for adding reliable evergreen foliage and texture to shady Irish gardens.
