Polypodium vulgare – Common Polypody

Polypodium vulgare, commonly known as Common Polypody, is a hardy, evergreen fern native to Ireland, prized for its attractive, leathery, deep green fronds. The narrow, arching fronds have distinctive, rounded lobes arranged along a central stem, creating a neat, elegant appearance. Creeping rhizomes gradually form spreading colonies.

Growing approximately 20–35cm tall, this adaptable, shade-loving fern thrives in partial shade and tolerates some sunshine. It prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Once established, it tolerates dry shade and grows naturally among rocks, on old walls and occasionally on trees.

An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, rockeries, stone walls, ground cover and planting beneath trees. Its compact growth and evergreen foliage make it particularly suitable for naturalistic planting and wildlife-friendly Irish gardens.
