Polygonatum verticillatum – Whorled Solomon's Seal
Polygonatum verticillatum, commonly known as Whorled Solomon's Seal, is a graceful deciduous woodland perennial, prized for its tall, slender stems and distinctive whorls of narrow, lance-shaped green leaves. From late spring to midsummer, small clusters of delicate, greenish-white, tubular, hanging flowers appear followed by attractive red berries.
Growing approximately 60–90cm tall and 20–40cm wide, this hardy, rhizomatous perennial gradually forms elegant clumps, adding height and fine texture to woodland planting.
It thrives in partial to full shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, although it tolerates some sun where sufficient moisture is available.
An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, and naturalistic planting, it combines beautifully with hostas, ferns and other shade-loving perennials.
RHS hardiness: H7 (below -20°C).
