Matteuccia struthiopteris - Shuttlecock/Ostrich Fern

Matteuccia struthiopteris – the majestic ostrich fern, prized for its tall, feathery fronds that unfurl in fresh spring green before forming elegant vase-shaped clumps 90–150 cm tall. Its bold, architectural presence makes it a standout in woodland gardens and damp borders.

Thrives in moist to wet, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade, and is particularly happy along pond margins, stream banks, or in reliably damp ground. Once established, it spreads by underground runners to form impressive colonies, creating a lush, naturalistic effect.

Low-maintenance and hardy, it provides dramatic foliage interest from spring through autumn. For gardeners with space and moisture to spare, it’s a wonderfully theatrical way to fill a shady corner.
