Epimedium x rubrum RHS AGM
€7.00
Epimedium × rubrum is a classic, tough-as-nails barrenwort that still manages to look charmingly delicate. Growing 25–35 cm tall, it forms a dense, slowly spreading clump of heart-shaped leaves that unfurl in spring with warm bronze-red tones before settling into a soft green. In mid–spring, it produces dainty red-and-yellow flowers held on wiry stems, giving the whole plant a light, dancing quality.
It thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and is particularly good in dry shade once established — practically a superhero where other perennials give up.
Interesting fact: Epimedium × rubrum was one of the first widely grown hybrid barrenworts and helped popularise the entire genus in gardens — proof that sometimes the quiet, modest types end up leading the way.
Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (RHS AGM).
