Dryopteris filix-mas - Male Fern RHS AGM 9cm

Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern) – RHS AGM

A magnificent, hardy deciduous fern native to Ireland and Britain, prized for its robust growth and elegant, arching fronds. The fresh green, finely divided foliage emerges in spring, forming an impressive, shuttlecock-shaped crown that brings height, structure and lush texture to shaded gardens.

Growing approximately 100–150cm tall with a spread of 60–100cm, Dryopteris filix-mas thrives in partial to full shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Exceptionally adaptable and easy to grow, this tough native fern tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including dry shade once established.

An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, naturalistic planting and wildlife-friendly gardens. Its impressive foliage combines beautifully with hostas, hellebores and other shade-loving perennials.

Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.
