Dryopteris cycadina RHS AGM

Dryopteris cycadina –Black Wood Fern

Dryopteris cycadina is a striking evergreen fern admired for its elegant, upright fronds and distinctive shaggy appearance. The finely divided, deep green fronds emerge from a crown densely covered in dark brown to almost black scales, which extend along the stems and contrast beautifully with the fresh green foliage.

Forming an attractive, shuttlecock-shaped clump approximately 60–90cm tall and 60–75cm wide, this hardy fern brings architectural structure and texture to woodland gardens and shaded borders. G

row in partial to full shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil; established plants can tolerate some dryness.

Particularly effective in woodland planting, fern collections, Japanese-style gardens and alongside hostas and other shade-loving perennials, Dryopteris cycadina provides a bold yet graceful presence throughout much of the year.

Dryopteris cycadina holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
