Dryopteris cycadina –Black Wood Fern

Dryopteris cycadina is a striking evergreen fern admired for its elegant, upright fronds. The finely divided, deep green fronds emerge from a crown densely covered in dark brown to almost black scales, which extend along the stems and contrast beautifully with the fresh green foliage.

Forming an attractive, shuttlecock-shaped clump approximately 60–90cm tall and 60–75cm wide, this hardy fern brings architectural structure and texture to woodland gardens and shaded borders.

Grow in partial to full shade in fertile, humus-rich soil; established plants can tolerate some dryness.

Particularly effective in woodland planting, fern collections, Japanese-style gardens and alongside hostas and other shade-loving perennials, Dryopteris cycadina provides a bold yet graceful presence throughout the year.
