Dryopteris carthusiana – Narrow Buckler Fern

Dryopteris carthusiana, commonly known as Narrow Buckler Fern, is an attractive, hardy, semi-evergreen fern native to Ireland, valued for its delicate, finely divided foliage and natural woodland character. Its elegant, narrow, lance-shaped fronds have soft green, intricately toothed leaflets, creating a beautiful, lace-like appearance.

Growing approximately 50–90 cm high and 50–90 cm wide, this graceful native fern develops loose clumps, gradually spreading through short creeping rhizomes.

Thriving in partial to full shade, it prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, particularly in damp, sheltered conditions.

Naturally found in wet woodlands, bog margins and marshy areas, it is ideal for woodland gardens, damp shaded borders, wildlife gardens and naturalistic planting. Its delicate foliage contrasts beautifully with hostas, primulas and other moisture-loving perennials.
