Dracunculus vulgaris – Dragon Arum / Voodoo Lily
Dracunculus vulgaris, commonly known as Dragon Arum or Voodoo Lily, is a spectacular, unusual tuberous perennial, prized for its enormous, exotic-looking flowers.
In late spring to early summer, a dramatic, deep burgundy-purple spathe unfolds around a long, almost black spadix, sometimes reaching 60cm in length. Tall, purple-spotted stems carry attractive, deeply divided green leaves, occasionally marked with silver.
Growing approximately 100–150cm tall and 50–100cm wide, this striking perennial thrives in full sun or partial shade, preferring fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It dislikes winter waterlogging. A sheltered position with relatively dry summer conditions encourages healthy growth.
Dracunculus vulgaris creates a remarkable seasonal display. Its flowers produce a strong odour for a short period to attract pollinating insects.
