Cyrtomium devexiscapulae – Sickle-Leaved Holly Fern

Cyrtomium devexiscapulae, commonly known as Sickle-Leaved Holly Fern or Chinese Holly Fern, is an unusual, evergreen fern prized for its distinctive, bold, architectural foliage. Native to East Asia, this rare woodland fern produces elegant, arching fronds with glossy, leathery, bright green leaflets, often irregularly shaped with attractive, sickle-like curves and finely toothed edges.

Forming a handsome, spreading clump approximately 60–80 cm high and wide, it brings an exotic appearance and year-round structure to shady gardens.

Thriving in partial to full shade, it prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, tolerating both acidic and alkaline conditions. Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, sheltered courtyards and containers, its striking foliage contrasts beautifully with hostas and finely divided ferns.
