Bletilla striata RHS AGM P9
β¬9.95
Bletilla striata, often called the hardy ground orchid, is a graceful and surprisingly tough little treasure. Growing 30β45 cm tall, it forms neat fans of pleated, fresh-green leaves and sends up elegant stems topped with rosy-purple, orchid-like flowers in late spring to early summer. Each bloom has that classic orchid poise β the sort that looks as though it practised in front of a mirror.
It thrives in sun or partial shade, preferring moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Once established, itβs impressively resilient, coping with more cold and occasional dryness than its exotic appearance would ever suggest.
Interesting fact: Although it looks tropical, Bletilla striata is one of the hardiest orchids you can grow outdoors in temperate gardens β a true overachiever in a glamorous outfit.
