Asplenium scolopendrium – Hart's Tongue Fern

Asplenium scolopendrium, commonly known as Hart's Tongue Fern, is a beautiful, hardy evergreen fern native to Ireland, valued for its distinctive, glossy, strap-shaped green fronds. Unlike most finely divided ferns, its broad, undivided leaves have gently wavy margins and form an elegant, arching rosette. Attractive rusty-brown spore lines develop on the undersides of mature fronds.

Growing approximately 30–50 cm high and wide, this reliable Irish native fern provides year-round structure and rich green foliage.

Thriving in partial to full shade, it prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, particularly neutral to alkaline conditions, but tolerates dry shade once established.

Ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, underplanting trees, stone walls and naturalistic planting, it contrasts beautifully with delicate ferns, hostas and woodland perennials.

RHS AGM: Award of Garden Merit.
