Asarum europaeum – European Wild Ginger (Asarabacca)

Asarum europaeum, commonly known as European Wild Ginger or Asarabacca, is a beautiful, low-growing evergreen woodland perennial, prized for its glossy, deep green, kidney-shaped leaves that form a dense, attractive carpet throughout the year. In spring, unusual, small, purple-brown, bell-shaped flowers appear close to the ground, often hidden beneath the foliage.

Growing to approximately 10cm tall and spreading 30–50cm, it thrives in partial to full shade, preferring fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil that is acidic to neutral.

An excellent choice for evergreen ground cover, shady borders, woodland gardens and planting beneath trees and shrubs, this slow-spreading perennial provides year-round colour and texture in difficult shady areas.
