Woodwardia fimbriata – Giant Chain Fern

Woodwardia fimbriata, commonly known as the Giant Chain Fern, is a magnificent architectural fern from western North America, prized for its enormous, gracefully arching, deeply divided green fronds.

Forming an impressive clump approximately 1–1.5m tall and 0.5–1m wide, it creates a lush, almost prehistoric atmosphere in woodland gardens, sheltered shady borders and beside ponds or streams. This evergreen fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring deep, fertile, humus-rich, consistently moist soil that is neutral to acidic. Its unusual chain-like arrangement of spores beneath the fronds gives this spectacular fern its common name.

Recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Woodwardia fimbriata makes a superb statement plant wherever generous foliage and dramatic texture are desired.
