Symphytum grandiflorum – Creeping Comfrey

Symphytum grandiflorum, or Creeping Comfrey, is a vigorous, deciduous perennial forming a spreading carpet of softly hairy, mid-green leaves. In late spring and early summer, it produces nodding clusters of creamy-white tubular flowers opening from reddish buds, which are attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Growing to around 30–40cm high and 60–100cm wide, it makes excellent ground cover beneath trees and shrubs, on banks and in woodland or informal borders.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It tolerates clay, chalk and loam and is extremely hardy once established. Its spreading habit makes it particularly useful for covering difficult areas, although it should be given space to develop.
