Sauromatum venosum – a striking, exotic-looking tuberous perennial for adventurous gardeners. Growing 60–90 cm tall, it produces dramatic deep purple-brown spathes with veined patterns in late spring to early summer, followed by large, tropical-looking green leaves that fan out from the base.

Thrives in moist, humus-rich, very well-drained soil in partial to full shade, and benefits from a sheltered spot to protect its tall stems. Slow to establish but unforgettable once in bloom, it adds bold texture and theatrical flair to woodland borders or shaded gardens. This plant can also be grown in a container if the corms are removed and stored in a cool, dry location indoors over the winter, similar to dahlias.
