This is a frequent, naturally occurring hybrid from Florida, S. leucophylla x rosea, with foliage dappled in red, pink and white. The traps are upright, up to 30cm. They are green at the base, but broad red and purple veins, with pink and white windows.dominate the pitchers. The hoods are broad and deeply ruffled and the lip is thick and deep red. The traps turn a deep red or maroon in the autumn. As with other S. leucophylla hybrids, it has a nice show of Spring pitchers, but even better in the autumn. S. x mitchelliana prefers open, sunny, boggy conditions, and holds its leaves into the frost. The dark red flowers are fragrant, and bloom early in the Spring before new traps are fully emerged. This is an outstanding accent plant for thesphagnum moss bog garden or raft, and is very showy in large numbers. This hybrid was named in 1885 in honor of the American doctor, botanist/explorer John Mitchell
