Polystichum setiferum ‘Wollastonii’ (Soft Shield Fern – ‘Wollastonii’)
Delicate in looks but tough at heart, Polystichum setiferum ‘Wollastonii’ brings a fine, feathery elegance to the shade garden—like a fern that’s dressed in lace but ready for action.
Growing to around 60–90cm tall, it forms a graceful, upright clump with soft, finely divided fronds that gently arch and shimmer in dappled light. Thrives in part to full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Hardy and evergreen, it’s perfect for adding texture, movement, and a touch of refinement—without the high-maintenance attitude. Think Downton Abbey, but with fronds.
A lovely variety discovered in Devon in 1852.
