Polystichum setiferum RHS AGM

Polystichum setiferum (Soft Shield Fern) – RHS AGM

A beautiful, hardy evergreen fern native to Ireland and Britain, admired for its graceful, arching fronds of finely divided, soft green foliage. The delicate, feathery fronds emerge in spring with attractive golden-brown scales, gradually forming an elegant, shuttlecock-shaped clump that provides year-round structure and texture.

Growing approximately 80–120cm tall with a spread of 60–100cm, Polystichum setiferum thrives in partial to full shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Exceptionally hardy and easy to grow, it is ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, naturalistic planting and underplanting trees and shrubs.

A superb native fern for wildlife-friendly gardens, combining beautifully with hostas, hellebores and other shade-loving perennials. Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance.
