Polystichum munitum (Western Sword Fern)
Bold, beautiful, and built like a botanical tank, Polystichum munitum is the ultimate woodland warrior. With tall, arching fronds up to 1.2 metres long, it brings lush, evergreen drama to shady spots—like a fern with serious stage presence.
It forms a dense, upright clump about 90–120cm tall and wide, thriving in part to full shade with moist, well-drained soil. Tough as old boots (but far better looking), it shrugs off drought once established and asks for very little. Perfect for woodland gardens or ferny backdrops—think of it as the action hero of your shade border: strong, silent, and always looking sharp.
