Polystichum makinoi - Makino's Holly Fern P9

Polystichum makinoi – Makino's Holly Fern

Polystichum makinoi, commonly known as Makino's Holly Fern, is an elegant evergreen fern, prized for its beautifully arching, triangular fronds composed of glossy, deep olive-green leaflets. The finely divided, slightly leathery foliage is carried on slender stems decorated with attractive brown scales, creating a striking contrast with the polished green fronds.

Forming a neat, symmetrical clump approximately 45–60cm tall and 50–60cm wide, this hardy fern thrives in partial to full shade, preferring cool, fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.

An excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, fern collections and planting alongside hostas and other shade-loving perennials, Polystichum makinoi provides graceful architectural structure and year-round foliage interest.

RHS hardiness: H5 (-15 to -10°C).
