Osmunda japonica – Japanese Royal Fern

Osmunda japonica, commonly known as the Japanese Royal Fern or Asian Royal Fern, is an elegant, hardy deciduous fern, forming graceful clumps of broad, fresh green fronds. In spring, distinctive upright fertile fronds emerge, gradually turning cinnamon-brown, creating an unusual and attractive contrast. The foliage develops warm reddish-bronze tones in autumn before dying back for winter.

Growing approximately 80–120cm tall, occasionally reaching 150cm in ideal conditions, with a spread of 60–100cm, this striking woodland fern thrives in partial shade and moist to wet, humus-rich, acidic to neutral soil. It tolerates some sunshine provided the soil remains consistently moist.

Exceptionally hardy (RHS H6), Osmunda japonica is an excellent choice for damp shaded borders, woodland gardens, pond margins and streamside planting. A beautiful architectural fern, particularly effective alongside hostas, astilbes and other moisture-loving perennials.
