Hosta 'Fire Island' RHS AGM

Hosta ‘Fire Island’ – Plantain Lily

Hosta ‘Fire Island’ is a spectacular deciduous, shade-loving perennial, prized for its brilliant golden-yellow spring foliage and striking deep red leaf stalks. The slightly glossy, heart-shaped leaves emerge bright yellow, gradually developing chartreuse-green tones as the season progresses, while the contrasting red stems retain their colour. In late summer, elegant spikes of pale lavender-purple, bell-shaped flowers rise above the foliage.

Forming an attractive, spreading mound approximately 35cm tall and 80–85cm wide, this medium-sized hosta thrives in partial or dappled shade, preferring fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Protect from strong afternoon sun to prevent scorching.

An outstanding choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, containers and planting alongside ferns and other shade-loving perennials, ‘Fire Island’ provides exceptional foliage colour from spring until autumn.
