Fargesia rufa is a wonderfully graceful, clump-forming bamboo that offers year-round elegance without any of the thuggish behaviour its running cousins are known for. Growing 2–3 m tall, it forms a dense, fountain-like mound of slender canes clothed in soft, fresh-green leaves that flutter charmingly at the slightest breeze — a plant that always looks as though it’s whispering gentle gossip to its neighbours.

It thrives in partial shade to full sun, preferring moist, fertile, well-drained soil, and is notably cold-hardy and non-invasive. With its evergreen foliage and fast growth, it’s perfect for hedging, screening, or adding a touch of Zen calm to the garden.

Interesting fact: Fargesia rufa is a favourite among giant pandas in the wild — a rather glowing endorsement, considering they are exceptionally fussy diners.

Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (RHS AGM).
