Equisetum scirpoides – Dwarf Horsetail

Equisetum scirpoides, commonly known as Dwarf Horsetail or Dwarf Scouring Rush, is a fascinating evergreen perennial with fine, upright dark-green, jointed stems marked by distinctive black bands at the joints. One of the smallest horsetails, it grows to around 15–20cm tall, forming compact clumps that are particularly effective beside ponds, in bog gardens, damp borders or planted in containers. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in permanently moist or boggy, humus-rich soil; it can also be planted in shallow water, making it an excellent choice for pond edges and water gardens. Extremely hardy and easy to maintain, Equisetum scirpoides provides unusual architectural texture and year-round interest, while its naturally compact habit makes it far easier to accommodate than larger horsetail species.
