Epipactis palustris – Marsh Helleborine Orchid

Epipactis palustris, commonly known as Marsh Helleborine, is a beautiful, hardy, deciduous terrestrial orchid native to Ireland, admired for its intricate, exotic-looking summer flowers.

From June to August, upright stems carry delicate blooms with pinkish-purple and reddish-brown sepals, creamy-white petals and a distinctive frilled white lip, attractively marked with yellow and red.

Growing approximately 30–60 cm high and spreading 20–30 cm, this unusual native orchid gradually forms colonies through creeping rhizomes.

Thriving in full sun or light shade, it requires consistently moist to wet, nutrient-poor soil, preferably neutral to alkaline.

Ideal for bog gardens, pond margins, damp wildflower meadows and naturalistic wetland planting, it provides exceptional floral detail while attracting pollinating insects.

A fascinating choice for gardeners seeking unusual, hardy orchids for Irish gardens.

Hardiness: Fully hardy in Ireland.
