Dryopteris wallichiana 'Jurassic Gold'

Dryopteris wallichiana 'Jurassic Gold' – Golden Alpine Wood Fern

Dryopteris wallichiana 'Jurassic Gold' is a striking, hardy, semi-evergreen fern prized for its spectacular changing foliage colours. In spring, beautifully divided fronds emerge in vivid coppery-orange, bronze and golden-yellow shades, often flushed with pink, before gradually maturing to fresh lime-green. Contrasting dark, scaly stems enhance its dramatic appearance.

Forming an elegant, upright, shuttlecock-shaped clump, this colourful woodland fern reaches approximately 60–90 cm high and 50–70 cm wide.

Thriving in partial to full shade, it prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, tolerating occasional dry shade once established. Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting trees and containers, its luminous spring foliage brings exceptional colour and structure to shady areas.

A superb, low-maintenance choice for Irish gardens, particularly alongside hostas and other shade-loving perennials.
