Dryopteris filix-mas 'Barnesii'

Dryopteris filix-mas ‘Barnesii’ (Upright Male Fern)

A striking, hardy, semi-evergreen fern distinguished by its tall, narrow, upright fronds and elegant architectural habit. The finely divided, glossy green foliage forms a strong, vase-shaped clump, with attractive reddish-brown scales along the stems. More upright and slender than the typical Male Fern, ‘Barnesii’ brings impressive height and structure to shaded planting schemes.

Growing approximately 100–150cm tall with a spread of 100–150cm, this robust ornamental fern thrives in partial to full shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Easy to grow and exceptionally hardy, it is ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders and naturalistic planting.

A superb choice for adding vertical interest and contrasting foliage texture, particularly alongside hostas, hellebores and other shade-loving perennials.
