Dryopteris crassirhizoma is a robust, attractive fern prized for its bold, architectural foliage. Typically growing to 60–90 cm tall, it forms upright, densely packed fronds of deep green with a glossy finish, creating a tidy, mound-like habit that works beautifully in shaded borders or woodland gardens.

It thrives in partial to full shade, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and benefits from a sheltered spot to protect its fronds from strong winds. Once established, it is hardy, evergreen, and relatively low-maintenance, offering year-round structure and texture.

Interesting fact: This fern is sometimes called the thick-rhizome wood fern because of its unusually stout underground rhizomes, which help it form dense colonies over time — a clever way for a plant to quietly take over a prime shady spot.

Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. (RHS AGM).
